Hudson County, NJ is the smallest county in the state and one of the most densely populated counties in the United States, with a population of 634,266 as of the 2010 Census. Jersey City is the county seat and the largest city in the county. Hudson County and the Hudson River on its eastern border are named for English explorer and navigator Henry Hudson, who established a claim for the area in 1609.

With easy access to an extensive network of roadways, trains, buses and ferries and a number of large companies headquartered in the area, Hudson County is a commuter’s dream. Most public transportation services are operated by New Jersey Transit, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, and New York Waterway.  Secaucus Junction provides access to eight commuter rail lines, and the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail, owned by New Jersey Transit, connects Bayonne, Jersey City, Hoboken, Weehawken, Union City and North Bergen.  The PATH, operated by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, is a rapid transit railroad linking Manhattan with Newark, Harrison, Hoboken and Jersey City.

Newark Liberty International Airport, LaGuardia Airport and John F. Kennedy Airport are less than 20 miles away, while Teterboro Airport in the Hackensack Meadowlands serves private and corporate travelers.

Schools & Education

The Hudson County Department of Education leads 13 school districts, 12 public high schools and 13 charter schools in the county’s 12 municipalities.  The Hudson County School of Technology is a public secondary and adult vocational-technical school with four locations.  Hudson County Community College, New Jersey City University, St. Peter’s College and Stevens Institute of Technology are all in Hudson County.

Things To Do

Despite its relatively small size, Hudson County has many county parks and beautiful promenades on the riverfront.  Ellis Island and Liberty Island, home of the Statue of Liberty, rest in county waters across from Liberty State Park, the largest in Hudson County.  Hoboken is well-known for its trendy nightlife, and local residents find no shortage of things to do with the county’s close proximity to bustling urban areas.
