Originally settled in the 1600’s and named Raritan Township in 1870, Edison Township was renamed on March 17, 1954 in honor of inventor Thomas Alva Edison, whose main laboratory was in the Menlo Park section of the township. Edison Township is the fifth largest municipality in New Jersey with a population of 99,967 as of the 2010 Census.
In 2009, the estimated median household income in Edison Township was $87,662, nearly $20,000 more than the state average, and US News & World Report named Edison one of America’s 10 Best Places To Grow Up.
As a transportation hub with roadways and train routes to New York City, Philadelphia, Boston, Trenton and Washington DC, Edison Township offers plenty of commuter options. The Garden State Parkway and New Jersey Turnpike go through Edison, along with Routes 1, 27 and 287. NJ Transit Trains can take you to New York Penn Station in less than an hour.
The Edison Township public school system serves nearly 14,000 students and consists of two high schools (Edison High School and J.P. Stevens High School), four middle schools and 11 elementary schools. The Middlesex County Academy for Science, Mathematics and Engineering Technologies, an engineering-based high school, is part of Middlesex County Vocational and Technical High Schools. Edison Township is also home to many private schools, as well as Middlesex County College and Rutgers University’s Livingston campus.
From the Edison Tower & Menlo Park Museum to the Edison Arts Society and Plays In The Park, Edison Township’s rich, diverse cultural heritage is always on display. Edison’s New Jersey Convention and Exposition Center is New Jersey’s largest private venue and hosts hundreds of public and private events, while Menlo Park Mall is one of the area’s most popular shopping destinations.
