Scotch Plains, NJ was first settled in 1684 by Scottish immigrants, who cleared the plains at the foot of the Blue Hills, now known as the Watchung Mountains. They built a community named Scotsplains in honor of their leader, George Scot, who died at sea before reaching what is now New Jersey. Originally incorporated as Fanwood Township in 1878, it was renamed Scotch Plains in 1917.
As of the 2010 Census, Scotch Plains had a population of 23,510 with a median household income of $68,444 in 2009. Children are served by Scotch Plains-Fanwood Public Schools, which includes Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School, two middle schools and five elementary schools. Union County College also has facilities in Scotch Plains.
NJ Transit’s Raritan Valley Line bisects Scotch Plains and commuters enjoy convenient rail and bus service to New York from the NJ Transit passenger station in neighboring Fanwood. Newark Liberty International Airport is just 14 miles away and easily reached via Route 22, while Interstate 287, Interstate 78 and the Garden State Parkway are nearby.
