50-Year Knoll Gardens ‘Golden Residents’ Receive a Year’s Free Rent

Peter and Catherine Salek

LAKE HIAWATHA, N.J. (Dec. 11, 2023) – Enjoying one’s home enough to remain there for 50 years is unusual in today’s day and age, to be sure. And while Peter and Catherine Salek speak fondly of their travel experiences, they are even more enthusiastic about the Morris County apartment to which they have always come home.

To reward their half century of loyalty, Garden Communities held a ceremony at Knoll Gardens in Lake Hiawatha this fall, presenting the Saleks with flowers, candy and a large cardboard check redeemable for a year’s free rent.

“We didn’t expect such a fancy ceremony,” said Peter Salek, recalling that when the couple first rented their apartment – one week after their wedding and fresh from their Poconos honeymoon – they signed a two-year lease. Both Saleks agree that the apartment has met all their needs over the past 50 years.

Now in their 70s and retired, Catherine remembers coming to view the development. “It was just being built,” she said. “It was brand new, and it was close to everything.”

Peter, who enjoyed a long career with Westinghouse and is now an avid bowler, said that while many of his neighbors have come and gone, he has always liked the people in the development. Catherine, who worked for many years at a bank, now enjoys doing arts and crafts, especially Christmas decorations.

The Saleks would definitely recommend Knoll Gardens as a place to live. Indeed, Catherine can recite a list of the best restaurants, bakeries and shops in the area. They have no plans to move out, added Peter.

A True Community

Members of the Knoll Gardens management team as well as representatives from Garden Communities corporate attended the Saleks’ Golden Resident ceremony. Maria Friscia supervises the Golden Resident program, established in 2020, which has recognized 15 individuals and couples to date.

“This is one of the best parts of my job,” Friscia said. “I really enjoy meeting and talking to our long-time residents and seeing how much joy it brings to our team when we celebrate them. This program truly represents Garden Communities’ mission to provide the type of quality apartments and sense of community that our residents can be proud to call ‘home.’”

Garden Communities is a leading New Jersey-based real estate owner, builder and operator in the multifamily niche.
