Middlesex County’s History & More

Middlesex County was originally founded in 1683, and is located in central New Jersey. The county’s name is derived from Middlesex, a historic county from southeastern England. Settlers came to this area due to its proximity to the Raritan River, which allowed the area to become a massively popular trading hub.

As of the 2017 Census, the county is currently estimated to have a population of about 842,798, making it the second most populated county in New Jersey. According to the census, the average household income in this county is $80,716. Currently, New Brunswick serves as the county seat.

Residents of Middlesex County have access to a wide selection of commuting options, which makes traveling a breeze. Trains operated by New Jersey Transit travel along the Northeast Corridor, North Jersey Coast and Raritan Valley Lines. In addition every township in Middlesex County is served by the county’s bus routes. The New Jersey Turnpike travels through the center of the county, making it an excellent asset for anyone who needs to get around quickly.

There are over 190 schools that are located in Middlesex County, and they are found across 25 school districts. The county is home to a number of notable high schools that rank quite high across the state. Middlesex County is also home to five campuses for Rutgers, the official State University of New Jersey. Another notable college in Middlesex County is the Middlesex County College.

Residents can also take advantage of the many public facilities found in the county. In particular, Middlesex County is home to some of the top hospitals in the area. These include Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, JFK Medical Center, St. Peter’s University Hospital and Raritan Bay Medical Center.

Middlesex County currently operates 18 distinct parks with a selection of recreational facilities that make up over 2,900 acres. A few of the parks that operate here include Donaldson Park, Johnson Park, and Thomas Edison Park. You can see all the parks by going here.

 
 

In addition to the parks, there are many other famous attractions that attract many visitors each year. One of them is the Thomas Edison Center at Menlo Park, which was built to honor the legacy of Thomas Edison and his creations. You can also visit New Jersey’s State Theatre and watch live performances. The county also operates three unique golf courses: the Tamarack Golf Course in East Brunswick, the Meadows at Middlesex in Plainsboro, and the Raritan Landing Golf Course in Piscataway.

The county is also home to many different shopping centers, including Menlo Park Mall, Woodbridge Center, and The Shoppes at North Brunswick.
