First explored by Dutch explorers in 1613, Ocean County was officially established in 1850 from portions of Monmouth County south of the Manasquan River.  Toms River is the county seat.

Ocean County students are served by 17 public high schools and several private and parochial schools in 33 municipalities.  The Ocean County Vocational Technical Schools offer an extensive network of vocational high schools as well as two magnet schools – the Marine Academy of Technology and Environmental Services and the OCVTS Performing Arts Academy.  Ocean County College and Georgian Court University are also in the county.

Ocean County’s most popular attractions are the beaches and boardwalks of Point Pleasant, Seaside Heights, Long Beach Island and other beachfront communities.  Six Flags Great Adventure in Jackson is home to the world’s tallest roller coaster and the largest drive-thru animal safari outside of Africa.  Lakewood Blueclaws baseball games are always packed with Ocean County families, while the Ocean County Mall and the Jackson Premium Outlets are popular shopping destinations.

Barnegat and Little Egg Harbor Bays are surrounded by 40 miles of barrier beaches and offer the perfect setting for watersports.  Tourist attractions also include Barnegat Lighthouse State Park and the quaint maritime history village at Tuckerton Seaport.
